Simulation of parametric decay instability excited by oscillating pump near lower hybrid frequency

چکیده
Parametric decay instability of lower hybrid waves plays an important role in plasma heating. Simulation such requires inclusion both electron and ion kinetics with a realistic mass ratio. In this work, the gyrokinetic fully kinetic (GeFi) particle simulation model is used to study parametric instabilities uniform, magnetized plasmas. A pump electric field near frequency imposed, which treated dipole approximation. Three types processes are obtained, including purely growing modulational instability, resonant non-resonant instability. Dependences growth rates on wavenumber, strength, systematically investigated. The results agree well those linear stage obtained existing theory. Whether or nonlinearity dominates process assessed, importance E×B drift three-wave interaction confirmed.

The Chaos Control in Parametric Decay Instability of Stimulated Backscattering by a Pump Frequency Modulation
Over the past decade, the problem of chaos controlling in plasmas attracted significant attention due to the importance of this topic for many processes in plasma physics [1-3]. In addition to the general interest of this subject the studies were motivated by the possibility of reduction of the anomalous transport, associated with plasma turbulent phenomena. It is well known that almost all sys...
متن کاملElectromagnetic particle simulation of the linear mode conversion and the nonlinear parametric decay instability of lower hybrid waves in tokamaks
In plasma simulations where the speed of light times a characteristic length is at a much higher frequency than the relevant parameters in the system, such as the plasma frequency, implicit methods begin to play an important role in generating e cient solutions in these multi-scale problems. Under conditions of scale separation, one can rescale Maxwell’s equations in such a way as to give a mag...
متن کاملCharacterization of onset of parametric decay instability of lower hybrid waves
The goal of the lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) program on Alcator C-Mod is to develop and optimize ITERrelevant steady-state plasmas by controlling the current density profile. Using a 4x16 waveguide array, over 1 MW of LH power at 4.6 GHz has been successfully coupled to the plasmas. However, current drive efficiency precipitously drops as the line averaged density (ne) increases above 1020...
متن کاملNear-inertial parametric subharmonic instability
New analytic estimates of the rate at which parametric subharmonic instability (PSI) transfers energy to high-vertical-wavenumber near-inertial oscillations are presented. These results are obtained by a heuristic argument which provides insight into the physical mechanism of PSI, and also by a systematic application of the method of multiple time scales to the Boussinesq equations linearized a...
متن کاملElectron current drive by fusion-product-excited lower hybrid drift instability.
We present first principles simulations of the direct collisionless coupling of the free energy of fusion-born ions into electron current in a magnetically confined fusion plasma. These simulations demonstrate, for the first time, a key building block of some "alpha channeling" scenarios for tokamak experiments. Spontaneously excited obliquely propagating waves in the lower hybrid frequency ran...
